Helping the Homeless

How many times have you driven down the road only to see someone holding a sign that says something along the lines of, "Homeless, Can You Help?  God Bless".  We've seen many signs and at times have helped in either the form of cash or purchasing food to give them.  Recently on Pinterest, I saw a bag that was full of items for the homeless.  Immediately, I fell in love with this idea.  I could help someone and not even have to question giving them cash because of possible alcohol or cigarette purchase (yes this has happened to me before).  We can have these bags ready to go and in the car any time the occasion may arise.  My hope is that whoever is in the car with me can get out, pray with the person and give them something that might make their life the slightest bit easier for a short time.  In the past, I have kept from helping others because I didn't see that it'd make that much difference.  I couldn't help as much as I wanted to so I ...

Reaching Out and Helping Others

How many times do we see a fellow brother or sister in need and do nothing to help. Don't get me wrong, praying is great, but what do you do physically? Is someone without food while you go out to eat weekly? Is a family without a vehicle when you have several? What if you're stretched beyond your own means and you still want to help others? I came across a verse today and it stuck a cord in me. I had never caught part of it. Ezekiel 16:49-50 49"Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had arrogance, abundant food and careless ease, but she did not help the poor and needy. 50"Thus they were haughty and committed abominations before Me Therefore I removed them when I saw it. "Abundant food and careless ease, but she did not help the poor and needy". Did you catch that? Wow. I started thinking about our country and how we're the most prosperous in the world. Yet many times we are food into thinking that we...

The Blessing of Helping Others and Being Blessed

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. How many times do we get excited about a raise, tax returns, etc... and think only of our family and what we'd like to do for them - or worse yet, of ourselves. Don't get me wrong, God wants us to be debt free. But, do we let that stand in the way of helping others? When we give or help others, do we do so by the prompting of the holy spirit, or with our own flesh. I can attest that if you do something out of your own selfish gain - even the gain of satisfaction in seeing others "happy", it will not be the blessing it could have been if the Lord had been in it. The first couple years we were married, we didn't have much money at all to work with. You wouldn't believe it if I told you! lol! Yet time after time, you would not believe what God worked out for us. He used family, strangers and our church to bless us. I remember a...
