My Journey Towards Better Health and Where I'm at Now

A picture my daughter took of me at the nature preserve. Isn't she a great photographer!

I have been asked by several people over the years what led me down this different path. Well, here goes. This is nothing at all against the way I was raised - this is simply my story.

As a child I developed hay fever around age 5. You can see in all my school pictures that my eyes are squinted and weepy for the first day of school. My first day of school was always taking mini kleenex packages with me and having semi-swollen and weeping eyes.

As I got a bit older I started getting throat, tonsil and ear infections. It got to the point where I would have at least 2-3 cases of each every year. By the time I turned 17 I was calling in my doctor's office telling him what ailment I had and could he please get me an antibiotic. At age 21 as a single mom I had become anti-biotic resistant to everything but the $100 antibiotic. That was something I just could not afford. It was then that I asked a fellow co-worker (and now dear friend) what I could use that was natural. As a child/teen I had bought into the myth that healthy living people were whacky. I was nervous about this change but knew something had to change. My friend told me that for a throat/tonsil situation to use Echinacea and Myrrh. I did as she said. As time went on, my infections got further and further apart.

A couple years later I married my perfect match, Matthew. I at that time became a stay at home mom. This freed up time for me to do research. Every time our family would have an ailment, I would research and see how the body worked and see what I could do about it in a natural way. A couple months after my husband and I had gotten married, I started getting sick every couple weeks. This landed me in the ER a couple times as well. It wasn't till awhile later that I learned not only the ducts in the apartment we were living in were harboring all kinds of nasties and causing all kinds of health issues with me and my daughter, but I was using very toxic cleaners very regular that I had not before been using.

It was March of 2004 where I went to my first homeschooling convention. At the convention there was a booth where they had cleaning supplies on the table. I thought that was kind of odd. Regardless, I picked up a brochure. It basically said I was poisoning my child. I at first was very upset. I would NEVER willing poison my child. The more I read the brochure and researched information after I left the convention, the more I began to understand what the brochure was talking about. I learned that everything that is around us, that we clean with, put on and into our bodies will either do good for us or will do damage. The damage we do leads to allergies, skin diseases, other diseases, etc...

As time went on, I changed our cleaners, body care products, food, etc... Little things here and there. My health got to a place that I could only dream of. In the meantime because of damage I had already done to my body, I was suffering several miscarriages. To date I have had either 4 or 5 losses. One of them we were not sure about. That too has an adverse affect on the body. After my 2nd living child was born (Jon), I started getting back into healthy living big again. My health was amazing! I never got sick, I haven't had a throat/tonsil infection in over 6 years and neither have I had an ear infection since then. I never get flus where I throw up and neither does the rest of my family. My husband was at this time still getting sick quite a bit which I'll let him share later. Through better diet and supplements, he is doing MUCH better now. Praise God!

Well, after my 3rd living child was born (Joshua), I started having issues again. My birth experience was very tramatic. I had an induction with high levels of pitocin and back labor (if you'd never experienced this, you have no clue how horrible it is) with no drugs. It wasn't to be a "tough woman", it was for the safety of my labor and baby. Needless to say, it was so traumatic, I pushed out my son very fast and forceful. I was so distraught about the labor I had. To this day it's even hard to talk about. About a week after my son was born I had some major burning and pain but I thought it was from the labor. Little did I know, I had a uti that was getting very bad. A few weeks into this and I had to go to the ER. My kidneys hurt so bad. It was while I was at the ER where I picked up West Nile Virus. I didn't know that's what it was for a couple months later. All I knew at the time was I was so tired, I had internal tremors, a weird rash that came on my arms and more. I ended up in Urgent CAre a couple times because of major heart palpitations and other issues. All this sickness and trauma caused my adrenal glands to stop working the way they should. I pushed too hard after the birth trying to get things done. My body no longer realized when it was tired and I went way over the point where I should have.

Why am I going into all the above? Family members lately have commented on different occasions "you're always sick". Not wanting to delve into the whole story I just say "no I'm not sick, I have a condition". It's like telling someone with fibromialgia that they are always sick because they get very tired and sore. Where am I at now? I feel things are looking up. With taking a nap in mid day, going to bed earlier and sleeping later (if the baby/kids allow), my adrenals are able to better heal. It's possible this could take a year long or more. I don't really know. All I do know is that I serve an amazing God who has put people in my life to help me figure out what's going on. And for the record, I've only been sick twice since my delivery of my son. Once with the West Nile the hospital so kindly shared with me and the second time was the swine flu. However, I was in bed 1 day and not feeling well the next. NO vomiting and no major symptoms thank the Lord because of all the wonderful things he's put on this earth to help us get better more quickly.

I've found those that don't live more "naturally" are the ones that watch closely to see if anyone in our family is "ill" and then strike out saying natural living does no good. It makes my heart sad. Since when is using the plants and herbs God has given us been a bad thing? God gave us all these wonderful things to help our bodies. Look at what we have done to the so called food most of us eat. Is it something God gave us for our bodies nourishment? That's for you to pray about and decide. I'm not at all knocking all Drs. out there. What I am saying is emergency rooms are for just that and I'm so thankful they are there. It would however do us all a great deal of good if we used a bit of prevention and found out exactly how our body works.

So the purpose of this post? To let you know where I'm at with my health (which I know I was a bit vague at points) and to let you know why I started down this path. One thing I failed to mention is that I in the past was told I had a heart valve issue. By using the heart herb that God has given us, that healed and cured my heart issue. Yes I could have taken medications but that would have left me reliant on those instead of actually healing the problem. I've seen many other miraculous things happen in my life, my families and other's. Please don't discount what God has given us for our food and medicine. I am so thankful for the healing that GOd has given me and what I know he'll do for me now and in the future.

Real Superheros - God's Angels!

I grew up loving comic books - I still do love them. My brother Jason is the one that got me hooked. Every time I hear another comic book hero movie is coming out, Matt and I try to go see it if possible in theatre. It's just something I love. Well, my kids follow that love of mine and sometimes, I wonder if it's a bad thing. In fact, I have a feeling it is. They can easily quote parts of the super hero movies, sing the songs that is on the movie, etc...

One day while visiting the local Family Video, I found a movie called Angel Wars. I thought, "well, we'll give it a shot". I was blown away. I love the animation of these kids movies as well as the message. In these action packed animated movies, God's angels fight against satan's demons for human souls. I think the movies were made VERY well. Check out the below link for a clip. To find out more. visit

It is nice to know that while watching these more often than some of the other kids movies, my kids will be playing out battles fighting for the salvation of human souls. :) Oh yes and one more thing, all the background music is sung by Christian artists. My kids know most of the music and are able to sing with it.

My favorite baby items

I have so many friends and family members pregnant. With that in mind it got me thinking about my favorite baby products, items

This crazy little snot sucker is amazing and has kept my boys from getting more sick because of mucus build up. Once it's stuck in the nose area it breeds more bacteria leaving little ones sick longer. I was referred to this by my friend Jamie Veprek. I'll admit, at first I was grossed out by the idea but knew i needed something that cleared out the little noses better than anything I've used before. These are amazing! When congestion was bad I'd put my baby in his bassinet in the bathroom with me. I'd take a nice hot shower to steam it up well, thus helping loosen the stuff in his nose. After I got out I'd suck like crazy and clear out his nose followed by a saline solution if it was really bad. It worked wonders! I also did this with my son Jon. As soon as we got the nasty green stuff out, he was feeling better within a day. I recommend this to everyone! You can get them on Remember to get the extra filters when you purchase this.

Hylands Teething Tablets

I used these for my daughter when she was a baby and I was not yet into natural things. It just said there were no side effects and that I liked. Here are some things to note with homeopathic remedies. Try to give no food 20 minutes before and after taking the remedy, do not touch with your fingers, take at regular intervals till the symptoms are gone then stop taking. If these things are not followed, you will not have near the wonderful results you could have.

My Brest Friend Deluxe Pillow

I had a Boppy pillow with my Jon but desperately wanted this with my next child. Thankfully I was able to get one for when my Joshua was born. These do not slip like the boppy's do. I think they also help support the back much better meaning less back aches. Thanks so much to my friend Maria Porter for recommending this many years ago.

Lansinoh Cream

Hands down the best boopy cream out there:) Cracked, sore and bleeding nipples really benefit from this. A little bit goes a long way.

Medela Pump in Style breast pump

Thanks to my friend Tonya Prim for giving me her no longer needed pump. This is truly the best pump out there. It's easy to use and has several settings. Very comfortable for the pumping mom.  For me, it was much more effective than the single hand pumps.

Reusable Nursing Pads - made from cotton t-shirts that are 100% cotton.

When a woman does not have heavy leaking, these are hands down wonderful! I just cut up 100% cotton t's and sewed together 5-6 layers. They are so comfy and work well.

Arms Reach Co-Sleeper

Hands down the best baby bed/pack n play type thing out there. My husband did not want our son in our bed this last time around. So, this was the best of both worlds for us. It was right next to me so I could pick up my son, have him nurse and put him right back down in his bed which was oober close to mine. It also converts to a play pen. These are def. worth the money. We were able to get ours used off of Craigslist. We still use it!

Vicks Baby Rectal Thermometer

The best and most accurate thermometer we've found. We like this because not only does it take the temp very fast, but it won't let you go too far in causing harm to baby.

Baby Bliss Gripe Water

This is the best gas solution out there! I tried many before this one. This works within 15 minutes and lasts. Make sure to store this in the fridge after you're done giving some to baby. I've found it at Meijer, Target and online.

Weleda Diaper Care Cream

Not much to say other than this is one of the most non-toxic baby creams and works well. I only needed cream with my Jon.

Wash Pod by Prince Lionheart

I'm so in love with this baby bathtub as is my son. It uses a very smart amount of water (eco friendly), makes baby feel comfortable and not scared and is just all around fun. Plus, it's super easy to empty out, clean and store away.

Lil' Peeper Keepers Baby Slings/Wraps

I love this lady's wraps. They are amazing! I get knit for little babies and the gauze for a bigger baby. Here's her link.

Smart Gear Peek-a-boo Ball

Last but not least is this super cute toy. I'm not a huge toy person but I love this! I purchased mine from Franklin Goose. It is smaller than what you might think. It's very easy for baby to hold. You should see our little guy watch these little heads pop in and out while he holds it and rolls it around.

Baby Medicine Spoons
These little spoons have come in so handy for us!  I wish I knew about these with my first child.  You know how it is, whether you're giving anti-biotics, herbal remedies, etc... it can be very hard trying to get your child to take the medicine and not spill it everywhere.  This has taken the spill out of the equation.  Very handy and reusable.  Just pop it in the dishwasher when you're done using it.

I'm sure I've probably missed something but here's some of our favorites so far. Enjoy!

The Healing Wonders of Plantain and Nasty Mosquito Bites!

Jon using a mortar and pestal crushing up the freshly washed leaves.

Wrapped up.

Most of you have seen plantain before and thought it was just another weed. What a weed indeed! One Native American name for plantain translates to "life medicine". Plantain has so many healing properties. It is an astringent herb that has diuretic, expectorant and anti-mucus properties, as well as mild anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It is healing, controls bleeding and fights bacterial infections. You can use all parts of the plant but I only use the leaves.

How can this plant be used? You can use it in dried or fresh form. You can make a tea from it, a salve, or as a poultice like we did above. Look for information on my blog on Green Salve. We use plantain in this amazing healing salve.

So on to what we did above. Jon had a nasty, nasty mosquito bite that was getting hard and hot and starting to weep. We washed off the weepy part with very warm water and applied the plantain. It's important to really work up the plant. The best way to do it is to chew on the freshly washed leaves for a bit to get the enzymes going. Please it on the area needing healed and wrap up. It's that simple. We used a piece of an old towel and tied it up. This can be done for bee stings, other bug bites and other skin issues. You can do this several times per day. A few years ago Jon has a staph infection and we did this hourly for awhile. We also gave him some silver shield for the infection and he healed beautifully. IT was amazing the change in his leg after 1 day of doing this.

So there you have it. Something you probably have in your own back yard. I would caution using leaves in sprayed yards or on city areas where they mow as they are probably sprayed. You can also purchase this dried at The Bulk Herb Store or other online sites. Visit the below site for more info.

1 Year Ago Today My Joshie Was Born!

Our first moment together.

Fresh baby :)

Baby wearing in the winter.

Eyes for only mama.

Squishy faces.

First park day with siblings.

All my babies feet.

Joshua, my dear sweet, Joshua. I remember being pregnant with him I had told Matthew "this boy is going to love music". He had rhythm even in the womb. To this day, I think he loves music more than my other kids. Don't get me wrong, Lyshie loves music, but music makes my Joshua come to life! How neat that we can know some things about our children before we even give birth to them.

So far, my Joshua is for the most part very easy going. When he is mad, oh is he mad! Another strong willed child to add to the two I already have. lol! He's a joker. He loves to make funny faces when you take pictures of him. Once he sees the red light (focusing in), it's all over. His nose scrunches up and he's cracking everyone up. He loves making people laugh.

Joshua is my cuddle bug - and daddy's too. He loves to "iss" which means kiss. He knows he is loved and I feel he in some way or other knew that the day he was born. He's always had people all around him loving on him. It's what sustains him.

Joshua has recently been very interested in cars. Actually, let me say it's the wheels on the cars he's very interested in. I LOVE it! It reminds me of Jon when he was little. Although he'll sit much longer than Jon ever did and just turn the wheels round and round. I wonder what his little mind is thinking.

Joshua has a little bit of his Grandma Sandi in him. The back of his hair is so fine that it tangles up when he sleeps or rolls his head around on a couch or floor. He's also started twirly his hair in his fingers. Both things are trade marks of me mum :)

When I had some very hard times a couple months after he was born, oh what a smile he brought to my face when nothing else could. If he was a girl, he surely would have been named Joy.

Joshua, my dear son, may God be your first love. May He guide you and may you be willing to follow Him all your life. God has something big in store for you my son. He is going to use you for His purpose. Follow Him and you will never be in want. My dear son, I pray this - that you will love the Lord with all your heart all the days of your life. Serve Him alone my son. My son, my Joshua, I love you! Welcome this your first birthday! How blessed are those of us who you have graced your presence with.
